I ended up taking DD and MS because they both seemed really useful in different ways. I had a similar issue when I was playing a sorcerer. When I play warlock I’m always taking misty step, but usually subbing it out for thunder step when I get the chance, then subbing that out for dimension door next. If you want damage use an actual damage spell (synaptic static you’ll get soon), if you want to teleport use dimension door. It just is outclassed (specifically on warlocks who don’t care about spell level really) by dimension door when it comes to its main goal which is teleporting. The noise it creates is terrible for sneaking, the damage becomes too low to be useful and it happens where you leave which can hurt your team. But it has downsides dimension door doesn’t. thunder step damage is low but not negligible, and you can bring someone with you. And when you NEED a teleport than blowing a full action is almost certainly worth it to save you and a friend, rather than just a 30 ft jump and then a dash action to run or something with misty step.īut absolutely ditch thunder step for Dimension Door. That misty step could be a banishment, or a hypnotic pattern. But usually you want your spell slots to do much more impactful things when you’ve got 4th level slots. If you want that BA teleport misty step for in combat repositioning than by all means keep it. It brings someone with you (this is HUGE), it has the biggest range, and you don’t have to see where you end up (you can get past wells, around corners, etc). In which case, dimension door is the best option. The thought being “if I have to burn a spell on a teleport, I really need to teleport.” Generally, with warlocks, 1 teleport is enough.
